A deadbolt lock backs up a handleset lock on entry doors to provide additional security. The bolt locks the door into the frame. A deadbolt lock on average is 1" in length. Since it is longer than a typical handleset lock, it makes it harder to pry open a door.
A single cylinder deadbolt has a button or a knob on the inside of the door and is operated by a key on the outside. Single cylinder deadbolt locks are recommended for doors that are solid metal or wood.
Double cylinder deadbolts are recommended for use on doors with glass panes. Double cylinder deadbolts ensure safety with a keyed lock both inside and out. Requiring a key on the inside helps prevent someone from breaking a glass pane, reaching in and unlocking the door. They would need the key to unlock the bolt. While you are at home it is suggested that you leave the key in the lock in case of a fire or other emergency.
Patio locks are one sided deadbolts. They typically have a knob that you can lock and unlock from the inside. Patio locks are typically used on patio doors for extra security.
